Module 30: The White Month
I've been giving you my favorite workouts over the past few weeks. But this week I'd like to change gears and do something different. I've never been to Sweden so I can't say with any certainty that the following is true, but apparently it's common place in Sweden to have a "white month" where a person ingests no alcohol.
I love the idea of a "white month" where you depart from the norm and do something drastically different from your usual routine.
I've done something similar the past few years where I'll choose one month a year (I like February because it's the shortest, and it feels like a good month for trying new things) but any month will do.
I also like following the rule of 3's so here's my personal "white month" challenge this year:
1) No alcohol.
2) No TV.
3) No internet at night.
Explanation: I've been traveling a ton as of lately and with travel comes networking events, meet-ups, and drinking. While I haven't been going out and getting drunk or anything like that, I have found myself drinking more alcohol than usual and it's starting to show on my waistline.
So a month without alcohol will only help. No TV: Pretty straightforward. I don't watch a lot of TV but it seems like I have it on for background noise. I shut just shut it off and read a book, now is my chance.
Lastly, no internet at night. I think this one will be huge. I've been working a lot of 12 hour days lately, which means I spend 8 hours on the computer during my day job then when I get home I'm back on the computer after everyone else goes to sleep.
It's taking a toll. So I'm enacting a no-internet rule at night for the next 28 days.
I suspect I'll wind up with a lot more free time during this "white month" but we'll find out.
If you'd like to construct you own white month challenge, here are a few suggestions:
- Don't try and do too much. Don't give yourself a dozen different rules to follow. The Swedish "white month" means no alcohol. That's one rule. I think 3 rules is ok but I wouldn't go beyond that.
- White months seem to be better suited for giving things up rather than layering on additional tasks. So while I'd like to work out every day AND complete a bunch of projects as well, I know I've got to just stick with my main 3 rules.
That's pretty much it, if you embark on your own white month challenge let me know how it goes for you.
